Your Website Doesn't Need Animations. It Needs to Load Fast.

Every time we take on a new web project, the client asks about animations. Smooth scrolling, fade-ins, parallax effects, elements that slide in from the side.
They think it makes the site feel premium. Modern. Engaging.
Here's what it actually does: it makes your site slower, harder to navigate, and more likely to break on mobile.
Animations Are Not Free
Every animation costs something. Load time. Processing power. Battery life. Compatibility.
A fancy fade-in might look slick on your MacBook Pro, but on a three-year-old Android phone on 4G? It stutters. Elements pop in late. The user has already scrolled past.
And here's the thing: people don't come to your website to watch animations. They come to do something. Book a service. Buy a product. Find information. Every millisecond you add to load time increases the chance they leave before that happens.
When Animations Actually Help
I'm not saying never use them. Some animations improve usability:
Micro-interactions that show feedback Button changes colour when you hover. Form field highlights when you click. Loading spinner while something processes. These are functional. They tell the user the site is responding.
Transitions that maintain context Modal slides in instead of popping up abruptly. Menu expands smoothly so you can follow the motion. These help users understand what's happening.
But decorative animations? The ones that exist purely to "add polish"? They're almost always dead weight.
The Performance Cost
We run PageSpeed tests on every site we build. One of the biggest killers? JavaScript-heavy animation libraries.
A site loads in 1.2 seconds without animations. Add a parallax scrolling library and suddenly it's 3.8 seconds. That's not a worthwhile trade.
People expect pages to load in under two seconds. If yours takes longer, 40% of users will leave before it even finishes rendering. Your fancy scroll animations aren't worth losing half your traffic.
Mobile Is Where It Falls Apart
Animations that work perfectly on desktop often break on mobile. Elements fire at the wrong time. Scroll events lag. Parallax effects judder.
And mobile is where most of your traffic comes from. If your site performs worse on the device most people use, you've failed.
What We Build Instead
When we design sites, we prioritize speed and clarity over visual tricks.
Clean layout. Fast load times. Clear CTAs. Readable typography. Plenty of whitespace.
Sounds basic? It is. But it converts better than a site loaded with animations that nobody asked for.
The A/B Test Nobody Talks About
We ran a test last year. Same site, two versions. One with scroll animations, fade-ins, and parallax backgrounds. The other with none of that, just clean, fast HTML and CSS.
The version without animations loaded 2.3 seconds faster. Bounce rate dropped by 34%. Conversions increased by 18%.
The client had specifically requested the animations. We showed them the data. They ditched them.
Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should
Modern web dev makes it easy to add animations. Scroll libraries, CSS frameworks, pre-built components. You can slap them into a site in minutes.
But easy doesn't mean good.
Every feature you add should answer one question: does this help the user complete their goal faster? If the answer is no, don't add it.
Speed Is a Feature
The fastest sites win. Not because people consciously appreciate fast load times (though they do), but because slow sites lose users before they even engage.
Google prioritizes fast sites in search rankings. Users prefer fast sites in behaviour tests. Conversion rates are directly tied to page speed.
You can have the most beautiful animated site in the world. If it takes five seconds to load, nobody will see it.
Build Fast First, Pretty Second
When we start a project, we optimize for performance from day one. Clean code. Compressed images. Minimal JavaScript. Then, if there's room in the performance budget, we add polish.
Most sites never need the extra polish. They convert just fine without it.
Skip the animations. Build something fast.
